No pretendas ser escritor sin haber leído antes Los miserables.
Ahora que me dio por los clásicos -sobre todo por los realistas-, Víctor Hugo (máximo exponente de los escritores románticos) pasa a formar parte de mis autores esenciales y, más que favoritos, admirados (mi predilecto es Flaubert). Es una delicia leer ‘Los miserables’, ya que su uso del lenguaje es tan perfecto, que la narración, a mi parecer, es atemporal. Por ende, llegué a la siguiente conclusión: quien se precie de aspirante a escritor debe leer primero esta novela.
Sobra decir que es mi teorema personal; igualmente, otros opinan que ‘El Quijote’ es una obra básica para los aspirantes a escritores, con o sin talento. No les falta razón.
En cualquier caso, les recomiendo mis tres últimas lecturas:
– ‘Madame Bovary’, de Gustave Flaubert.
– ‘Eugénie Grandet’, de Balzac.
– ‘Los miserables’, de Víctor Hugo.

Yo no sé hasta qué punto se puede trasladar la magia verbal de un escritor en una traducción. Si se trata de aprender del uso del lenguaje de un determinado escritor, optaría por escritores en caastellano, aunque el novelista se supone que pierde menos en la traducción. Esto no quiere decir que no se pueda aprender a escribir en traducciones. La de Cortázar sobre la prosa de Poe es muy buena, pero ahí opera una parte de cada uno de los dos talentos. Ahora, ¿como traducir su poesía de Poe, en la que los sonidos de las palabras son tan importantes? ¿Lees de verdad los estilos de Flaubert, Balzac y Hugo? Creo que no
Por supuesto que soy consciente de que son traducciones, pero, en el caso de Los miserables, me quito el sombrero ante su traducción. El lenguaje es perfecto, probablemente se acerca bastante al estilo original, propio del mismísimo Víctor Hugo.
Dices que no leo los estilo de Flaubert, Balzac y Hugo. Permíteme que discrepe; las traducciones están muy bien logradas. Si nos ponemos en esta tesitura, entonces no hemos “leído” a ningún clásico. Además, advertí que es un teorema personal, no es una afirmación literaria, ni mucho menos.
Por último, cabe decir que admiro a los autores en castellano, pero eso no significa que tenga que centrarme en ellos para aprender a escribir ficción. El universo de la literatura es demasiado vasto como para creer que sólo en versión original se puede captar el estilo impregnado en un texto. Pero, repito, es mi opinión personal.

Yo creo que lo importante para aprende a escribir es leer, una tarea para la que se puede elegir los maestros más insospechados. Delibes asegura que adquirió su estilo leyendo el código de comercio, y Baroja tomó el suyo de los folletines de aventuras. No hay caminos ni maestros prefijados, cada cual hace su senda y elige sus guías.
Ahora, también creo que una pieza literaria traducida se convierte indefectiblemente, en mayor o menor medida, en otra cosa.
Esto es más cierto de unos géneros que de otros. La poesía, que es más artilugio verbal, presenta más problemas que la prosa. Y dentro de la poesía, unas estéticas más que otras. Por ejemplo, la poesía simbolista francesa, con todos sus sonidos sugerentes, sus alitreraciones, la coloración de las vocales… es todo un reto para el traductor. Por eso creo que en estos casos las ediciones bilingües son fundamentales. Y entonces la traducción es también un arte, que tiene que ser fiel al original pero no sacrificar el valor poético.
En el caso de los autores que citas, quizá salvando la poesía de Hugo, no se llega a tales extremos. De todas formas, por lo que te leo tienes un estilo muy trabajado. Además, son muy interesantes las entradas de tu videoblog sobre libros.
